If it's a video file or a streaming site it depends on the source file, the program you're playing it with, the settings of the program, your Windows sound settings, your Realtek driver settings, and potentially on what codec packs you've got installed. I know at least Dolby's patents expired at some point in the last couple of years, but that doesn't mean they have to make their own implementation free, either, and since most people are using HDMI these days instead of optical, there's still not much in the way of an alternative. You need to be able to re-encode the sound in real time for that to work, and Dolby and DTS both want money for the encoder. What type of media are you trying to play? If it's a video game it flat out won't work without shelling out for a Dolby Digital Live/DTS Connect license, and that's if the hardware even supports it.

Has anyone found a working driver for this? Or perhaps some kind of work around? Testing Dolby Digital in the Supported Formats tab results in actual 5.1 surround, with both my rear channels working as expected. I attempted one which did add said option to my dropdown list in Default Format but I was unable to get any audio to play out of the rear channels. I've been googling for the past couple hours and have seen some modded audio drivers that supposedly add DD live and enable it in windows sound control panel. I'm having trouble getting Realtek to output Dolby Digital. I currently have a Sonos 5.1 surround sound system hooked up to my PC via the optical out port on my motherboard (MSI MEG Z390 Ace).
